Elm Grove is a small village in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. It is a suburban community consisting of a single neighborhood and is the 130th largest community in the state of Wisconsin. Elm Grove was named America’s best suburb by Business Insider in the fall of 2014. The community is quite affluent when compared to state and national statistics and is known for its good school system and quiet streets. The workforce is decidedly white-collar in nature with over 96% of workers holding white-collar positions. Also, over 8.5% of the workforce works from home via small businesses, telecommuting and other options.
The area that is now the village of Elm Grove was once a part of the larger city of Brookfield. However, Elm Grove was incorporated in as an independent community in 1955. Elm Grove was named for the vast growth of elm trees in the area. Settler first drawn to the area by it’s fertile land during the mid-1830s and agriculture quickly became the first industry and economic base. In 1848, Wisconsin gained statehood and residents of several areas worked together to begin construction of a wood plank road running 58 miles from Milwaukee to Water Town. Plank Road, which follows the path of the original plank road through town, is still a main thoroughfare in Elm Grove. In 1856, the railroad came through giving the community a growth boost. The community soon had a post office, general store, depot, tavern and more.
The village spans 3.28 square miles that is virtually all land area. In 2010, the population was 5,931, the population density was 1,814.7 people per square mile and the per capita income was $62,089. By 2013 the population was 5,949, the estimated median household income was $116,233 and the estimated per capita income was $61,846. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $362,122, the mean price on all housing units was $285, 196 and the median gross rent was $872. The current median home value is $374,589. Students attend schools in Elm Grove and other surrounding communities such as Tonawanda Elementary, Pilgrim Park Middle School, Brookfield Central and Brookfield East High Schools.
