The city of Franklin is a medium sized city nestled in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin nine miles from downtown Milwaukee. It is made up of approximately six neighborhoods and is the 22nd largest community by population in the state. The city is somewhat ethnically diverse and has a warm and friendly atmosphere. The city features quiet streets as well as lively ones, beautiful park lands and a wonderful school system. Many notable residents have called Franklin home, including, but not limited to NASCAR driver Ted Musgrave, advocate and politician Jessie Rodriguez and Wisconsin Secretary of State Peter Doyle.
Prior to 1839, the area that would become Franklin was the southern portion of the town of Kinnikennick. However, in December of 1839 it split off to become the town of Franklin. This newly independent town was officially founded, organized and named for Benjamin Franklin in 1841. Bye the 1950s the city had grown into a thriving, primarily residential, community known as the “city of homes.” As a suburb of the big city of Milwaukee the residents of Franklin feared annexation. This fear led them to band together and officially incorporate in 1956 to avoid the possibility of annexation.
The city spans 34.69 square miles of virtually all land area. The population in 2010 was 35,451 residents and the per capita income was $34,904. The population estimate for 2012 was 36,083 and for 2013 it was 36,310 showing slow, but steady growth. In 2013, the estimated median household income was $71,044 and an estimated per capita income of $34,878. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $214,030, the mean housing price on all units was $222,946 and the median gross rent was $928. The city has a mixed workforce of both white and blue collar workers and according to Franklin’s 2012 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the top five employers in the city were Northwest Mutual, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Franklin Public Schools, Krones and GA Preston.
Public education in Franklin is primarily provided by the Franklin School District. However, portions of the city are also served by the Oak Creek -Franklin School District and the Whitnall School District. The Franklin School District is made up of five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The community also has several wonderful private schools like the Indian Community School of Milwaukee and St. Paul’s Lutheran School. The city has 15 stunning parks that span 173 acres and feature seven miles of bike/jogging trails and 15 recreational facilities. Amenities range throughout the parks, but include things like picnic areas, playgrounds, sports fields and courts and beautiful open green spaces. The city hosts seven annual events throughout the year like the St. Martins Fair, Summer Concerts in the Park, Trick or Treat Observance and more.
