Greendale is a medium sized city or village in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. The city has approximately nine neighborhoods and is the 20th largest community by population in the state. Greendale features walking paths, green spaces along with unique and historic homes and civic buildings. The village opened for residence in May of 1938 and at its opening featured 572 living units split between 366 buildings. Today, the historic Downtown Center has 25 unique shops and boutiques as well as cafes, coffee shops and more. One of the more well-known historic sites and structures in Greendale is Trimborn Farm, a Greek Revival style Victorian era estate that was built in 1846. Throughout the years the village has been home to many notable residents including, but not limited to folklorist and linguist Jeremiah Curtin, actress Jane Kazmarek and AFL player Dave Smith.
The community spans 5.57 square miles and is virtually all land area and has a mixed workforce of white and blue collar workers. In 2010, the population was 14,405 and the population density was 2,571.8 people per square mile. In the same year, The median household income was $55,553, the median family income was $65,071 and the per capita income was $28,363. By 2010, the population had dropped to 14,046, the population density to 2,526.3 people per square mile. Further, in 2010, the per capita income had risen to $30,234 which ranks the city at an over all upper middle class income when compared to the rest of the state and the U.S. as a whole. By 2013, the population had risen again and stood at 14,340 residents, the estimated median household income was up to $63,626 and the per capita income had risen to $32,347. Also, in 2013 the estimated median house or condo value was $192,173, the mean housing price on all units was $170,561 and the median gross rent was $876.
Public education in Greendale is provided by the Greendale School District which features schools like Greendale High School, Greendale Middle School, Canterbury Elementary and others. The village has seven beautiful parks, including, but not limited to Community Center Park, Lions Park, Dale Creek Park and Jaycee Park. Greendale was named a National Historic landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. According to the prestigious award Greendale is one of only a few “Greenbelt” communities and was constructed during the Great Depression. Local attractions include Whitnall Park, Boerner Botanical Garden, Oakleaf Trail, Southridge Mall (Wisconsin’s largest enclosed shopping center) and more. The community holds many annual events that help foster a sense of community and civic pride, the events include but are not limited to Spring into Greendale, Fourth of July Celebration, I Left my Heart on Broad Street, Greendale Gallery Night, A Dickens of a Christmas annual winter event and many more.
