Mequon, Wisconsin is a medium sized city in Ozouka County. It has approximately five neighborhoods and is the 36th largest community by population in the state. The city is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Area, has a mayor/council form of city government and is somewhat ethnically diverse. In 2005, it was ranked #19 on CNN’s Money Magazine’s “100 Best Small Cities in the United States” list. Mequon is also one of 10 bird cities that participated in the Great Wisconsin Birdathon in 2013. Many notable residents have called Mequon home including, but not limited to actor/director/screenwriter John Ridley, brewer and politician Adolphus Zimmerman, musician Willy Porter and former AFL player and coach Jack Harbaugh and many others.
The area was first inhabited by native tribes such as the Potawatomi and Menominee. Fur traders and trappers were the next to arrive, they used the Milwaukee River to move through the area. The town’s name is thought to be derived from the Native American word “Miguan” or EmiKwaan which means ladle. Though “Mequon” itself is a French spelling structure. In about 1835, the land for the town of Mequon was surveyed by a man named Bink and his assistant Follet. The first settlers to the area were Isaac Bigelow and Daniel Strickland. The first postmaster to the community was John Weston. The Methodists held the first religious services in the community at the home of Isaac Bigelow, but the first religious structure was the Lutheran Church built in 1840. The first town meeting was hosted by John Henry Thien in 1846. The town was incorporated through an act of Congress in 1846 and then re-incorporated in 1957.
The city spans 48.77 square miles, 46.28 square miles of land area and 2.49 square miles of water area. In 2010, the population was 23,132 and the population density was 499.8 people per square mile. By 2013, the population was 23,334. In the same year, the estimated median household income was $100,943 and the estimated per capita income was $60,036. Further, estimated median house or condo value was $322,358, the mean price on all housing units was $442,379 and the median gross rent was $1,407. Population estimates for 2014 put the population at approximately 23,225. The town has a decidedly white-collar workforce with over 90% of workers holding white-collar positions. A portion, 7.77% of the workforce, works from home via small businesses and telecommuting. Public education is primarily provided by the Mequon-Thiensville School District, with a small portion of the city being served by the Cedarburg School District.
